Matthew Kennedy, MA, RP

Matthew Kennedy,
M.A., Registered Psychotherapist

Matthew (Matt) Kennedy brings over 15 years of experience in the mental health and addictions field. His practice is grounded in a neuroscience-based, nervous system-informed framework, recognizing the role of physiological state in emotional and psychological functioning. Drawing on principles of neuropsychotherapy, he integrates bottom-up and top-down approaches to support durable change.

Matthew is trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy® (ART), a structured and effective approach for treating trauma, depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns. ART uses guided eye movements to help clients process and reconsolidate distressing memories, often without requiring them to verbally relive or extensively describe the experience.

As one of the first psychotherapists in Canada trained in Tholáge® Neuropsychotherapy, Matthew works with suppressed or avoided emotional experiences, using guided techniques to help bring these experiences into awareness so they can be processed differently. Tholáge® is particularly effective for clients who feel stuck, disconnected, or unable to access underlying emotional experiences that resist traditional talk-based approaches.

Matthew is also a Certified HeartMath® Trauma-Sensitive Practitioner, offering HeartMath® coherence training and HRV biofeedback to help clients improve emotional regulation and build resilience through heart rate variability and physiological coherence practices.

Matthew incorporates vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) as part of an autonomic nervous system-informed approach. VNS may support shifts in physiological state and can be used to help clients move out of states such as shutdown or heightened stress. Matthew is a pioneering psychotherapist in Ontario, bringing Clinical Vagal Stim Therapy using the Dolphin Neurostim microcurrent device into psychotherapy practice, offering this as part of in-person sessions to support nervous system regulation.

Known for his warmth, sense of humour, and signature dad jokes, Matthew brings levity into the therapeutic space, because tough work and laughter aren't mutually exclusive.

Reset. Regulate.
Rewire. Repattern.

NeuRoute™ is an applied neuropsychotherapy framework targeting the nervous system as the foundation for emotional regulation, behavioural change, and durable recovery. It integrates state-based regulation with trauma memory reconsolidation, creating new neural routes of safety, agency, and flexibility.

01
Reset

Interrupt acute and chronic physiological stress states to create immediate access to calm, safety, and presence.

02
Regulate

Build autonomic flexibility and the ability to intentionally shift state before and after activation.

03
Rewire

Create durable neuroplastic change in trauma and emotional memory networks at both event-specific and pattern-based levels.

04
Repattern

Consolidate new nervous system routes into identity, behaviour, and relationships so change becomes automatic and durable.

Offerings

Psychotherapy sessions are 50 minutes. Specialized intervention fees reflect the clinical protocol, not the clock. Dolphin Neurostim® Vagus Nerve Therapy is available as a complimentary add-on to in-person sessions, using microcurrent to support nervous system regulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NeuRoute™ Applied Neuropsychotherapy Framework?

NeuRoute™ is a neuro-informed psychotherapy framework that targets the autonomic nervous system as the foundation for emotional regulation, trauma recovery, and lasting change. Treatment moves through four phases: Reset, Regulate, Rewire, and Repattern, guiding clients from physiological stabilization through to durable neuroplastic change. Rather than relying on insight alone, NeuRoute™ integrates evidence-based somatic and eye-movement interventions to create new neural routes of safety, agency, and flexibility.

What is Vagus Nerve Stimulation?

Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) refers to techniques that activate the vagus nerve, the primary nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system, to shift the body out of stress states and into calm, safety, and presence. At NeuRoute™ Psychotherapy, VNS is delivered through the Dolphin Neurostim® device and somatic vagal techniques including breathwork and orienting. VNS is used in the Reset and Regulate phases to build nervous system access and stability.

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART®)?

ART® is an evidence-based, eye-movement therapy developed to treat trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and grief. It uses guided eye movements to help clients process and reconsolidate distressing memories, often without requiring them to verbally relive or extensively describe the experience. ART® is used in the Rewire phase of NeuRoute™ treatment to target discrete, identifiable traumatic events and specific memory pathways.

What is Tholáge® Neuropsychotherapy?

Tholáge® is an eye-movement and somatic neuropsychotherapy that uses guided eye-movement techniques to access the neurochemicals associated with emotional release and reconsolidation. It is particularly effective for clients who have not been able to move through unresolved anger and emotional material through cognitive approaches alone. At NeuRoute™, it is used in the Rewire phase to bring suppressed or unresolved anger and emotional material into conscious awareness for processing and integration.

What is HeartMath® coherence training?

HeartMath® is a research-based system of techniques and biofeedback tools that train heart rate variability (HRV) coherence, a measurable state of physiological balance associated with improved emotional regulation, resilience, and nervous system flexibility. HeartMath® HRV biofeedback provides real-time feedback on physiological state, allowing clients to develop greater awareness and control of their autonomic responses. At NeuRoute™ Psychotherapy, HeartMath® is used across the Reset and Regulate phases to build autonomic stability and support intentional state shifts.

What is the Dolphin Neurostim®?

The Dolphin Neurostim® is a handheld microcurrent point stimulation (MPS) device that targets the auricular branch of the vagus nerve to support nervous system regulation. It is used as a non-invasive, drug-free tool to reduce physiological stress, improve vagal tone, and enhance access to parasympathetic states. At NeuRoute™ Psychotherapy, the Dolphin Neurostim® is available as a complimentary add-on to in-person sessions.
